Abstract:

This journal club presentation explores the power of digital storytelling in enhancing empathic responding and narrative competence among healthcare professional learners. Inspired by the character Agatha Harkness from the Disney+ series WandaVision, we examine how immersive technologies can reveal and humanize patients’ lived experiences with medications. We will reveal how our MAGIC project leverages Generative AI and metaverse environments to portray patients’ medication journeys through superhero and villain archetypes, offering a fresh perspective on patient-centered care, in a new field known as digital health humanities. Just like Agatha’s unmasking  of her complex character in the series, we shall discuss how hero-villain portrayals can foster empathy and understanding through the unveiling of patients’ hidden stories. This session provides insights into how technology-enhanced learning can cultivate deeper connections in the patient-practitioner relationship by merging the “art” and “science” of digital health practice to promote a more compassionate and insightful approach to care.
